Bangladesh: Pressure on sugar mills to clear cane dues

Dhaka, Bangladesh: Sugarcane farmers in Bangladesh staged a demonstration by forming a human chain on Dhaka-Khulna Highway at Modhukhail in Faridpur to demand pending cane arrears worth Tk 1.70 crore. The arrears are unsettled with Modhukhali sugar mill for the cane it has procured in 2019-20 crushing season.

The state-owned sugar mills are reeling under massive debts due to stockpile of sugar in the warehouses and unable to clear the stocks. The officials say that the mills would be relieved of financial burdens if they could sell the stockpiled sugar. According to the media report, the production cost of the sugar is around double the market price that has increased the problems of the sugar mills in the country.
