Bangladesh: Sugar mill suspends crushing operations due to sugarcane shortage

Cane crushing operations at the Darshana Carew & Company Sugar Mill was suspended on Friday morning due to cane shortage.

The mill began operations on December 23, 2022, setting a target to produce 3,884 metric tonnes of sugar by crushing 62,000 metric tonnes of sugarcane during the 53-day operational period of the mill.

The officials stated that the mill has produced 2,270 metric tonnes of sugar by crushing 46,937 metric tonnes of sugarcane in 42 days.

The mill had to stop operations and could not operate for the remaining 13 days as there was a shortage of sugarcane, said Mosharraf Hossain, managing director (MD) of Carew & Co.

For the first time since the setting up of the mill in 1938, the mill had to suspend crushing after 42 days.

Joypurhat Sugar Mill suspended its operations on January 19 for the same reason.

The largest state-owned sugar mill had suffered a loss of Tk 66.17 crore during last season, stated the mill sources.
