Bangladesh: Sugar mills likely to produce less sugar this season

Dinajpur: Two sugar mills, one located in Thakurgaon and the other from Joypurhat are likely to produce less sugar this season compared to last season as they have lowered the volume of sugarcane for crushing.

Sugarcane crushing at Thakurgaon Sugar Mills began on December 24 and at Joypurhat Sugar Mill on December 30.

The Thakurgaon sugar mill faced technical glitches at the initial level after starting crushing operations and the machines were repaired by the technicians from Dhaka. The mill is expected to crush around 50,000 tonnes of sugarcane this season.

Joypurhat Sugar Mills is expected to crush around 30,000 tonnes of sugarcane this season. The mill had crushed 1.6 lakh tonnes last year. The recovery rate of the mill would be 6.5 per cent.

The suspension of operations of six sugar mills has affected the farmers from Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Natore, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Pabna and Panchagarh since 2020.
