Bangladesh to buy sugar from Brazil

Amid surge in sugar prices in country, Bangladesh is planning to buy the sweetner at Tk 53 from Brazil.

The local refineries are facing difficulty producing sugar to cater to the domestic demand due to a gas crisis which has resulted in commodity price rise

The cost of imported sugar after adding VAT and regulatory duties would be Tk 78 per kg.

The government would sell sugar to people having family cards at subsidized rates through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh. The approval of purchasing 12,500 tonnes of refined sugar through an international tender was proposed by the commerce ministry.

Sayeed Mahbub Khan, an additional cabinet secretary said that the country will spend Tk 659.84 million for the purchase of refined sugar from the South American country. The cost of the sugar for the consignment has been fixed at $524.21 per tonne.
