Bangladesh to import 12,500 tonnes of sugar

The state-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is planning to import 12,500 tonnes of sugar at a rate lower than the prices in the local market, reports Newagebd.

The proposal of the TCB has been approved by the cabinet committee. The TCB will procure 12,500 tonnes of sugar at Tk 82.94 from Smart Matrix Pte Ltd of Singapore.

The sugar would be sold to the selected buyers at a subsidized rate to keep a check on inflation. The TCB sells sugar at Tk 60 per kg.

The price of sugar in the local market has increased to Tk 140 per kg from Tk 120 per kg in the past week.
