Bengaluru, Chinimandi: Lok Sabha election is around the corner, and Karnataka is likely to set up a new sugar factory in Mandya. Farmers from the state said it is a gimmick before the general election. CM HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil may contest Lok Sabha polls from Mandya constituency.

Kumaraswamy while interacting with experts at Vidhan Soudha indicated that the government would close the ailing state-run Mysore Sugar Co Ltd (Mysugar) instead of reviving it. He said, “Funding of about Rs 400 crore by the government for MySugar factory in the past ten years has not helped. We have decided to open a new factory in Mandya.”

He held Centre responsible for mounting cane arrears and blamed them for not allowing to lift stock worth Rs 38 crore in the factory, due to which it is not able to settle the dues of farmers. Kumaraswamy assured that his government would take steps to ensure pending dues will be cleared soon.

According to the report published in a leading news website, Karnataka government is planning to step up the new factory on 57 acres near Sathnuru Farm on the outskirts of Mandya after shutting MySugar.
