Belize Sugar Industries may challenge new sugar regulations

Belize Sugar Industries Limited/ American Sugar Refining will be challenging the regulations set to impact its ability to export sugar.

The regulations will go before the House of Representatives soon.
The miller has issued a statement stating that in a meeting of the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB) held on May 12, the Sugar Industry (License to Import/Export Sugar) Regulation 2023 was approved. It was stated in the meeting that the regulations are unnecessary, burdensome and discriminatory.

As per the BSI/ASR, the SICB has the power to decide whether a business is good and capable of a license and provides an opportunity to interfere with private operations. It will not tolerate the government’s intention to pry into BSI’s commercial affairs, it said.
