Bijnor: Sugar mills face closure due to cane shortage

Dhampur: Several sugar mills in the Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh are facing closure due to a shortage of sugarcane. The Changipur sugar mill has announced plans to close on March 20, the Afzalgarh sugar mill at the end of March, and the Dhampur and Seohara sugar mills on April 16-17.

Mill officials stated that despite efforts, there’s an inadequate supply of sugarcane by the indent.

According to Manoj Kumar Kont, the special secretary of the Dhampur Sugarcane Committee, approximately 25-30 per cent of the sugarcane crop in regions such as Dhampur, Seohara, Bilai, Afzalgarh, and Noorpur was destroyed due to red rot disease and flooding in rivers. This has led to a scarcity of sugarcane. Sugar mills have begun advising farmers to ensure sugarcane supply as per the indent. Awareness campaigns are being conducted by the Changipur and Afzalgarh sugar mills among farmers. However, mills are still facing insufficient sugarcane availability.
