Centre may sell surplus wheat in trenches to keep check on flour prices

The government may sell surplus wheat in different states in trenches to keep a check on the rising prices of flour (atta), reports Business-standard.

There is surplus wheat with the Food Corporation of India taking it to 22.7 million tonnes as against the buffer stock requirement of 20.5 million tonnes.

Pramod Kumar S, president of Roller Flour Millers’ Federation of India said, “We have urged the government to release 40 lakh tonnes of wheat from stock to the open market to control rising prices. Some traders are holding wheat in anticipation to raise prices and increase their profit.”

The buffer stock requirement is 7.5 million tonnes and the projected stock for April 1, 2023, is 11.3 million tonnes.
