Closure of Kibos sugar mill due to trade conflict, suspect senators

The senators have suspected that the trade war is the actual reason behind the closure of the Kisumu-based Kibos Sugar factory. The deteriorating relationship between the miller and the National Environment Management Agency (Nema) maybe also one reason, said the Agriculture Committee.

According to the media report, Enoch Wambua, Senator from Kitui said the factory had a cordial relationship with the state agency and the Agriculture ministry and was at a loss how the rapport abruptly changed, leading to its closure.

Kakamega’s Cleophas Malala questioned over the different treatment to the mill than that of other mills in the region.

Nema visited the factory in March and ordered a shutdown over environmental pollution. For the last two years, Kibos sugar factory has been on Nema’s radar for environmental pollution.
