Coimbatore: Prison inmates to cultivate sugarcane

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu: Coimbatore central prison authorities have started a ‘sweet’ initiative to encourage agriculture activity. They have planned to start sugarcane cultivation at Open Air Jail (OAJ) campus in Ondipudur soon. The planting is expected to start from March-end and will be harvested during 2021 Pongal festival.

Around 1.5 acre land out of 30 acre land of OAJ campus will be used for cane cultivation. The steps have been taken after successful cane cultivation in Tiruchy in 2020 Pongal.

G Shanmuga Sundaram, DIG of Prisons (Coimbatore range), said, “Generally sugarcane is planted from January to March and harvested during December to March. We have completed the tests on soil and water and are ready to take plantation this month only. To meet the government demands, we can supply sugarcane to them. If the yield is high then we can sell it through our prison bazaars,” he further added.
