Convicts begin growing sugarcane in Vellore prison

Vellore: The Vellore Central Prison has initiated sugarcane cultivation along with other activities to help convicts boost their income which will help them after they are released from jail.

V Rukmani Priyadarshini, Superintendent of Vellore Central Prison said, “Along with other activities, we have started sugarcane cultivation in the premises of prison deploying convicts. We have planted 300 sugarcane cuttings in the prison farm and have deployed 10 convicts to look after them.”

She said vegetables including brinjal and tomato are also being cultivated in the prison farm, apart from sugarcane.
