Coronavirus live updates on 17th March: India reports third coronavirus death from Maharashtra

Coronavirus, which originated in the Wuhan city of China, has so far spread to more than 100 countries infecting over 1,20,000 people. Coronavirus in India is also spreading across many states in the country.

The health ministry has issued an advisory on measures to enforce social distancing and suggesting shut down of all educational institutions gymnasiums, museums, cultural and social centres, swimming pools and theatres till March 31. The government has also tightened the lockdown on the spread of coronavirus cases with travel restrictions prohibiting entry of all passengers from European Union, European Free Trade Association, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Philippines and Afghanistan.

14:32 IST: Doctor who treated COVID-19 victim in Karnataka tests positive for coronavirus
Deputy Commissioner, Kalaburagi on Tuesday said that the 63-year-old doctor, who was attending the 76-year-old man — patient who died of coronavirus here, has tested positive for COVID-19. The doctor is among the 10 people who have been tested positive across Karnataka so far. “A 63-year-old doctor who treated the 76-yr-old man who died due to coronavirus has tested positive. He along with his family has been kept in quarantine at his home. He will be sent to isolation ward today,” said Sharat B, Deputy Commissioner, Kalaburagi.

Amid coronavirus outbreak, all gardens and parks in Jammu and Kashmir have been closed till further orders.

The district administration has been instructed to keep all gardens and parks closed till further orders, said the directive. Total three positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the Union Territory.

12:26 IST: Centre rolls out guidelines for ‘home quarantine’ to contain coronavirus spread
Amid the outbreak of coronavirus in the country, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday issued guidelines for home quarantine.

The citizens have been asked to stay in a well-ventilated single room preferably with an attached/separate toilet. “If family member needs to stay in the same room, it is advisable to maintain a distance of at least 1 meter between the two.”

The suspected people fallen prey to the deadly virus have also been asked to “stay away from elderly people, pregnant women, children and persons with co-morbidities within the household.” The Central government in its guildines have also mentioned about the public health measures to control the outbtrak of this virus and stated, ” Wear a surgical mask at all the time. The mask should be changed every 6 to 8 hours and disposed off.”

“Avoid Sharing household items eg. dishes, drinking glasses, cups or orther items with other people at home.”

Further tightening the lockdown to contain the coronavirus spread, the government on Tuesday imposed fresh travel restrictions prohibiting the entry of travellers from Afghanistan, Philippines and Malaysia and suspended all flights from the three countries.

11:41 IST: Coronavirus cases in India touch 125
With a total of 11 fresh cases, the number of novel coronavirus cases in India rose to 125 on Tuesday, the Union health ministry said.
The numbers have gone up from 114 total infections reported yesterday. Today’s tally of 125 positive cases includes 22 foreign nationals in the country.

11:28 IST: Coronavirus  in Maharashtra: India reports third coronavirus death
India on Tuesday reported the third death from coronavirus with an elderly patient suffering from the infection passing away in Maharashtra.

The 64-year-old patient suffering from coronavirus died at Mumbai’s Kasturba Hospital. This is the first death due to the disease from Maharashtra, which has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus patients at 39, out of a total of 110 plus cases in the country.
The two other deaths due to the infection in India were from Karnataka and Delhi, respectively.
