Dangote Sugar Refinery crafts own master plan to ensure Nigeria achieves national sugar objectives

In addition to the National Sugar Master Plan introduced in 2012, Dangote Sugar Refinery has developed its strategic blueprint aimed at advancing Nigeria’s overarching sugar objectives, as detailed in company documents, reported Punch.

Named the “Dangote Sugar for Nigeria Master Plan,” this vision is focused on enabling the company to achieve an annual production capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes (MT/PA) of refined sugar sourced from locally cultivated sugarcane. Through its backward integration programme (BIP), Dangote Sugar Refinery seeks to establish a robust and flourishing sugarcane-to-sugar value chain within Africa’s most populous nation.

Industry analysts express confidence in the feasibility of this objective, citing the rapid progress observed at Numan and Tunga plants. This drive commenced shortly after 2012, following the inception of the Nigerian Sugar Master Plan (NSMP) under the leadership of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The NSMP aimed to enhance local sugar production, achieve self-sufficiency, and diminish the reliance on imported raw and refined sugar.

The implementation of this initiative saw active participation from committed stakeholders, notably Dangote Sugar Refinery, spearheaded by Africa’s wealthiest individual, Alhaji Aliko Dangote. Twelve years since the inception of the master plan, Dangote Sugar has exceeded initial expectations, securing over 120,000 hectares (ha) of land for its sugar BIP projects across Adamawa, Nasarawa, and Taraba states. A substantial portion of these hectares has already undergone clearance and cultivation, with some progressing to secondary stages of development.
