Deadline to levy additional tax on unblended auto fuel extended by one month

Amid increased global oil prices and high inflation, the government has extended the October 1 deadline to levy additional Rs 2 per litre tax on unblended auto fuels by six months for diesel and one month for petrol.

This would provide relief to the consumers in the areas having less supply of ethanol or biodiesel to blend with the fuel.

A notification issued on Friday stated that the deadline for petrol has been extended to November 1, 2022, and for diesel to April 1, 2023. After implementation of the orders, the prices of petrol and diesel would increase at petrol pumps affecting the retailers.

In her budget speech on February 1, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that to encourage the government’s efforts to blend fuel, the unblended fuel will attract an additional excise duty of Rs 2 per litre from October 1, 2022.
