Demand to hike sugar prices in Bangladesh

Sugar refiners in Bangladesh have proposed the government to hike the sugar prices by Tk10 per kg to match the global sugar prices. They have made the demand following the government’s decision to hike the prices of edible oil.

According to the media report, Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association (BSRA) has proposed to increase the price of sugar to Tk85 per kg from Tk75, and the MRP of unpackaged sugar to Tk80 from Tk74 per kg. Though the Commerce Ministry is yet to approve the price hike, the sugar is sold at higher rates in the domestic market.

“Government should take steps to adjust the local prices as the price hike in international markets will definitely impact the local markets,” said Mustafizur Rahman, distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).
