District Magistrate warns sugar mills of action

Cane arrears in Uttar Pradesh has become a major talking point for all political parties it has crossed more than Rs 10,000 crore. Yogi government seems to be stern on the issue of cane arrears. Government has asked district authorities to make sure that mills clear the pending dues of cane growers.

Following which Muzzafarnagar District Magistrate (DM) Ajay Shanker Pandey called a meeting of millers and urged them to clear dues of sugarcane farmers. He also warned them of strict action in case of non-payment of arrears.

Interacting with media, DM said, “During the current crushing season, the sugar mills at Tikaula, Rohana Kalan, Titawi, Khaikheri, Khatauli, Mansurpur, Bhensali and Morna had purchased 787 lakh quintals of sugarcane from farmers, producing 90 lakh quintals of sugar.”

While the total cost of sugarcane stood at more than Rs 2,52,69,529 and, over Rs 1,58,73,994 was paid to farmers.

The District Magistrate asked sugar mills to explain their entire work plan to pay arrears.

Opposition parties in the state slammed the state government over the issue. The government claimed that despite the adverse conditions, it had cleared dues.
