Egypt faces sugar crisis

Cairo: The prices of white sugar in Egypt have risen to 16,750 Egyptian pounds ($683) during the last few days, reports Al-monitor.

The price of the popular Al-Doha Sugar was increased to 23 Egyptian pounds ($0.94) in retail stores while the price of low-quality sugar was 18-21 pounds.

The country is facing this situation despite having the world’s largest sugar factory with an annual production of 900,000 tons.

The shortage of US dollars have affected the supply of raw sugar from ports to the market and led to the sugar crisis in Egypt, according to experts.

“The lack of supply and less availability of sweetener with merchants has led to the sugar crisis,” said Hassan al-Fandi, head of the sugar division at the Egyptian Chamber of Food Industries.

“This is the period when beet production season ends and the lack of imports due to dollar shortage as well as global crisis due to pandemic and Russian-Ukrainian war has aggravated the situation,” he said.
