Egypt: Sugar imports down as local production increases

Cairo: Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ali El Meselhi said on Tuesday that Egypt is achieving self-sufficiency in sugar production as well as production of other food items.

According to the news report published in sis.gov.eg, he said, “Country witnessed an increase in sugarcane and sugar production. Self-efficiency also climbed from 75 per cent to 89 per cent. Also, the ministry’s new strategy led to a reduction in imports. The country has enough sugar stocks for five months.”

The minister had met with the heads of sugar production companies in January and discussed the plan to increase sugar production to make the country self-sufficient.
