Egypt’s Canal Sugar aims to produce 400,000 tonne sugar

Dubai: Canal Sugar from Egypt will produce 400,000 tonne white sugar per year from sugar beet from 2021, informed the company’s chief executive Islam Salem.

Speaking on the side-line of an industry event in Dubai, Salem said, “Construction of the company’s sugar beet factory will be completed this year and the project will reach full capacity of 900,000 tonnes of white sugar a year in 2023.”

Egypt annually needs 3.3 million tonne sugar but produces around 2.5 million tonne sugar. The Canal sugar aims to bridge the gap.

“The priority will be to cater to the need of the local market but there are good economic chances for export to neighbouring countries” Salem further added.
