Egypt’s sugar industry to achieve self-sufficiency in 3 years

Cairo: Egypt will achieve self-sufficiency in sugar production in the next three years to meet the domestic need, said Ahmed Abu Al-Yazid, chairman of the Delta Sugar Company.

During a television interview, Abu Al-Yazid said that the current sugar production in Egypt is around 2.7 million tonnes.

“Egypt’s sugar production is sufficient to cater 90% of the country’s needs and we are expecting to increase sugar output that will make us self-sufficient in the next three years,” he said.

Ali al-Moselhy, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade had met with the heads of sugar production companies in January and had discussed the plan to increase sugar production to make the country self-sufficient.
