Fall armyworm: Wayanad farmers put on alert

The Agriculture Department has alerted the farmers in the Wayanad district over the infestation of fall armyworm (FAW).

Pest attack has been reported in the crops grown in various parts of the district including Perikkallur and Pulpally in Panamaram block Panchayat and Edavaka in Mananthavady block Panchayat.

The pest is spreading across the world damaging crops. The lepidopteran pest indigenous to the Americas migrated to Africa in 2016 and India in June 2018. It eats the leaves and stems of more than 80 plant species including sugarcane.

The department has urged farmers to contact nearby Krishi Bhavan if they notice the attack of pests in their region.
