Farmers agitate over delay in fixing procurement price for sugarcane

Mysore/Mysuru: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of the State Farmers Association Federation and the State Sugarcane Growers Association launched a protest at the Mysuru Taluk Office against the delay in fixing the procurement price of sugarcane by the government, reports Star of Mysore.

Baradanapura Nagaraj, General Secretary, Taluk Sugarcane Growers Association said, “Farmers are being exploited by giving an amount which is less by Rs.350 per ton compared to that of last year. This is being done on the pretext of increase in cost of sugarcane cutting and transport charges.”

“Farmers are being harassed by bankers for recovery of loans and cases are being filed against them in the courts,” he said.

The government should announce a fixed minimum price for sugarcane and scrap the existing minimum sale price committee, Nagaraj said.
