Sugarcane farmers in Pakistan’s Punjab have stated that the sugar mills are refusing to purchase sugarcane varieties of 56-Jhang and 84, reports Dawn.
The farmers met the Punjab Cane Commissioner Zaman Wattoo and informed him about the millers not accepting these varieties.
The sugar mills had provided the farmers with the seed varieties of 56 Jhang and 84 before starting the crushing season but they are now refusing to purchase the crops when they are ready, said farmers.
The farmers also complained that the sugar mills in Punjab are purchasing sugarcane at Rs225 per maund whereas the mills in Sindh are purchasing sugarcane at the rate of Rs 250 per maund.
The sugar mills are not paying the quality premium against their sugarcane which is their right and the government should take note of this and force mills to pay them the premium, said farmers.
