Farmers oppose government’s move to shift sugarcane research centre from Mandya to Belgavi

Mandya: Sugarcane farmers from Mandya have opposed the plan to move the Mandya Sugarcane Research Centre to Belgavi.

As per the news report published in Thehansindia.com, the government is also planning to shift the Bengaluru-headquartered commissioner’s office to Belgavi.

The farmers are angry over the plan as they are already agitating for the revival of the closed Mandya Sugar factory (Mysugar) which has stopped operations for many years. Farmers have demanded to drop the shifting idea.

The centre established 15 years ago has introduced more than 15 new sugarcane varieties that have immensely benefited the sugarcane farmers as well as rural research students.
