Mysuru: The Federation of State Farmers’ Organisations has written to Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi, seeking support for farmers to produce and sell ethanol. The appeal was made by its president Kurubur Shanthakumar, who also heads the State Sugarcane Growers’ Association, The Hindu reported.
In his letter, Shanthakumar referred to concerns over the availability of liquefied petroleum gas following global tensions, including the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. He noted that LPG connections and stoves were provided to households under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana with an assurance of regular supply.
He said disruptions in overseas LPG supply linked to the conflict have led to reduced availability, creating anxiety among consumers.
Against this backdrop, the federation has suggested that farmers be encouraged and permitted to produce and sell ethanol for domestic use. It said the move could help reduce dependence on imports and save foreign exchange.
The letter also highlighted safety concerns, stating that ethanol, being a liquid, carries a lower risk of explosion compared to LPG cylinders.
Recalling past practices, Shanthakumar pointed out that kerosene was earlier distributed through fair price shops along with ration supplies. He proposed that ethanol could similarly be made available to consumers through fair price shops and cooperative societies.
The representation has also been sent to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
