Fiji: 60,000 tonnes of sugar produced so far in the ongoing season

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the sugar mills in the country have done remarkable cane crushing.

Vimal Dutt, Chief Executive, Sugar Cane Growers Council said that as per the performance report of the FSC, the sugar mills have crushed around 700,000 tonnes of sugarcane so far during this crushing season and produced 60,000 tonnes of sugar.

“Adhering to the COVID protocols we are doing pretty well and all the sugar mills are operating as per the norms issued for operations and procuring sugarcane to produce sugar,” he said.

The sugar production is increasing despite some challenges at the start of the season, he said. The Labasa Mill is leading the sugar production by supplying more than 250,000 tonnes of cane and producing 24,000 tonnes of sugar.
