Fiji: Rarawai sugar mill is ailing

Ba’s Rarawai sugar is not operating properly and is ailing, admits Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh, reports Fiji Times.

The mill machines are old and upgrading them would cost millions of dollars, said Singh urging farmers to cooperate.

Since crushing began in May, more than 200 Lorry drivers are facing problems due to sudden stoppage of the mill, said Rarawai Cane Lorry Association president Atish Kumar.

The millers earlier encouraged us to bring cane stating that the mills would operate smoothly, but are not addressing our concerns, he said.

Singh said that the Fiji Sugar Corporation and the ministry are doing their best to resolve the issue and ensure that the mill starts operations smoothly.
