Fiji records low sugar production

Sugar mills in Fiji have crushed over 1.6 million tonnes of sugarcane and produced 145,875 tonnes of sugar. The sugar produced is less as compared with the same period during last year which stands at 149,571 tonnes.

According to the Fiji Sugar Corporation, low cane purity has affected the sugar output. The crushing was low during the past few days owing to the Diwali festival.

Mahendra Chaudhary, Fiji Labour Party leader has raised questions over lower sugar output. According to the media report, he said that the total cane crushed has reduced from 3.23 million tonnes in 2006 to 1.7 million tonnes in 2019 and has also questioned what has been done to achieve the target set in 2012 to produce 4 million tonnes of cane by 2020.
