Fiji: Sugar ministry boosts opportunities for female farmers

The Sugar Ministry is ramping up efforts to provide more opportunities for female farmers, as highlighted by Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh during a parliamentary debate on the Ministry of Sugar’s review report for 2016 to 2020.

Singh stated that the ministry’s new farmers program is specifically designed to assist women who wish to pursue cane farming. So far, this initiative has supported 61 registered and active female cane growers across the country.

The minister also praised the achievements of several highly successful female farmers who are producing over 300 tons of cane, effectively challenging traditional stereotypes.

Additionally, the Sugar Ministry has taken further steps to empower female farmers by sending four women to India for capacity-building training, equipping them with advanced skills and knowledge to enhance their farming practices.
