Fiji: Yogesh Karan, Permanent Secretary for Sugar, said that the country has witnessed increased by 30 per cent in sugarcane yield since 2016. This has helped the farmers to increase their profit from $25 to $30 for every tonne of cane.
According to the media, Karan says both the cane production and yield has continually increased from 1.39 million tonnes of cane and 37 tonnes of yield per hectare to 1.81 million tonnes in 2019 with a yield of 48 tonnes per hectare.
“Government will continue supporting the farmers related to the cane crop. The cane growers are faring well when compared with other businesses and crop cultivators,” he further added.
