Goa: Cane growers charged Rs 18 lakh as transportation cost

Ponda: According to the news report published in The Times of India, sugar factory deducted over Rs 18 lakh from farmers bank accounts. Farmers had suppled 20,000 tonne of the produce worth Rs 3 crore to the Laila Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana across the border in Khanapur, Belgavi in the last crushing season. Cane growers claim that this was done by the Laila factory as the truck contractor hired to transport the canes had not paid the truckers.

After the government stopped operations at the Sanjivani Sugar factory, the sugarcane was transported to the Laila sugar factory. The government is paying support price and harvesting cost to the cane farmers.

Chief minister Pramod Sawant had announced that farmers will be paid Rs3,600 per tonne for cane supplied to the Khanapur factory. But the deductions have left the farmers in a quandary.
