Goa: Sugarcane farmers to decide on agitation after December 5 meeting

Ponda: The Goa Sugarcane Farmers Association will decide on whether to start an agitation after the meeting of the State government-appointed facilitation committee on December 5, reported The Goan.

The association had earlier given a 15-day ultimatum to the government to spell out its approach to the proposed ethanol project. However, the facilitation committee chairman has assured to hold a meeting on December 5, after which the farmers will decide on their next course of action, said Rajendra Desai, president of Goa Sugarcane Farmers Association.

Desai further stated that the Sugarcane Farmers Facilitation Committee chairman Narendra Sawaikar has assured that he would conduct a meeting on December 5 to discuss the future course of action.

The farmers are demanding that the government take a quick decision on the ethanol project, as they are facing a financial crisis after the Sanjeevani Sugar Factory was shut down. They have also not received any subsidy from the government, which has made their economic condition even worse, said Desai.
