Goa: Sugarcane farmers turning to coconut cultivation

Sanguem: Sugarcane farmers in Goa are turning to coconut and areca nut cultivation as the uncertainty over the Sanjivani Sugar mill continues.

The area under sugarcane cultivation continues to decline for the last seven years. The only sugar mill in the state has closed its operations and there is meagre sign of its revival. The cane produced in the state is sent to the neighboring Karnataka state for crushing.

The Sanjivani Sugar mill was shut initially for maintenance work and later it did not start operations due to outdated machinery. Several options to revive the mill came forward but nothing has happened so far.
