The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) announced on Wednesday that the restrictions on the export of all varieties of sugar have been extended beyond October 31.
According to the DGFT notification, the restriction on the export of sugar (Raw Sugar, White Sugar, Refined Sugar, and Organic Sugar) has been extended beyond 31-10-2023 until further notice. Other conditions will remain unchanged.
However, it said these restrictions will not be applicable to sugar being exported to the EU and the US under CXL and TRQ duty concession quotas. A specified amount of sugar is exported to these regions under CXL and TRQ (tariff rate quotas).
In the 2022-23 season, the government allowed sugar mills to export only 61 lakh tonnes of sugar, after permitting them to sell a record 110 lakh tonnes in the 2021-22 season.
Major sugar-producing states, Maharashtra and Karnataka, have received low rainfall this year, which is likely to reduce sugar production in both states. Therefore, the government is ensuring sufficient availability of sugar for domestic consumption at a reasonable price.
