Chandigarh, Apr 17 (UNI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has expressed serious concern over the unprecedented losses that the farmers in Punjab have suffered due the untimely rain on Tuesday, preceded by the high velocity winds on Monday evening, leaving their wheat crop worth lakhs flattened acres over acres.

In a statement here on Wednesday, Punjab Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema said the untimely rain had destroyed a major chunk of wheat crop on Tuesday night ready for harvesting.

He said it had proved double whammy for the beleaguered community as they were already grappling with farm issues and concerns.

The AAP leader said while the impact of the rain was widespread in the state, it was more in areas like Ropar, Jalandhar, Patiala, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Bhatinda and many more, where crops were totally destroyed incurring a loss of worth lakhs of rupees.

In Ropar district only, 500 villages were affected where ripe wheat crops over 2000 acres of land was damaged by the wayward rains. A large number of distressed farmers from these villages held a тАШdharnaтАЩ to press the government for release of compensation, he added.

The LoP said the farmers were subjected to sufferings for years now due to the anti-farmer policies of the state and union governments of Congress , which ruled the country for more than seventy years now. The problems of the farmers have multiplied over the years due to their insensitivity. No concrete farmer-friendly policies were framed for the farmers to meet the losses caused by natural calamities, et al, leaving them to fend for themselves, thus aggravating the malaise.

Cheema demanded that the both state and central governments should take an urgent call on the concerns of the farmers and bail them out from the serious farm crisis and financial mess they were trapped in forcing them to commit suicides due to heavy debts. He also urged the government to get тАШgirdawriтАЩ done on a priority basis to assess the losses and release 100 per cent compensation to the affected farmers within a time frame.

The LoP also demanded that the governments should float certain farmer-friend insurance schemes and other to enable them to meet a crisis of this kind.
