Ludhiana: Taking strong action against Bhagwanpur Sugar Mill in Sangrur district, the Punjab government has decided to auction it as the factory has failed to pay off pending dues of sugarcane farmers.

In February and March, sugarcane farmers had protested by blocking the state highway due to cane arrears worth Rs 74.46 crore. Following the intense agitation, the owner released part dues, but around Rs 42 crore is still outstanding.

According to the statement released by Sangrur DC’s office, “As the mill owner has failed to make payment to the farmers, hence properties of the owner at Baralwal and Dhuri stand attached. They will be auctioned as per the payment to be released to farmers.”

The sugar mills in Punjab owe sugarcane farmers more than Rs 1,000 crore.
