According to a report by Financial Express, the Indian government is unlikely to permit a second tranche of sugar exports for the ongoing season (October-September). The government had so for allowed 6 million tonnes (MT) for sugar exports this season.
The decision to withhold further exports is aimed at maintaining stability in domestic sugar prices, which may experience fluctuations due to lower sugar production in Maharashtra and Karnataka, as per media reports.
Steps are being taken by government to ensure that the reduced output does not disrupt the supply of sugar in the coming months.
In the previous season, India exported 11.2 MT of sugar. The official further emphasized that the government is closely monitoring prices and implementing measures to prevent any sudden surge in prices due to the decreased sugar output.
