Amul plans to launch organic sugar in next one month

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) plans to broaden its range of “organic” products with the launch of Amul sugar, jaggery, and tea within the next month, reports The Hindu BusinessLine.

“We currently offer 24 organic products, such as wheat flour, rice, and pulses. Over the next month, we will introduce additional items like organic sugar, jaggery, and tea,” said Jayen Mehta, managing director of GCMMF, in an interview with The Hindu Business Line. Amul, known for its dairy products, ventured into organic foods in 2022 with the launch of Amul Organic Whole Wheat Atta.

While not disclosing procurement specifics for the new products, Mehta emphasized, “We all desire food free from chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Soil carbon levels are depleting. By consuming organic foods, we encourage farmers to adopt organic practices, provided there is a market demand. We are telling the producers that there is a market and we are also informing the consumer of it.”

Under the Amul brand, GCMMF already sells various organic products including chana dal, masoor dal, toor dal, whole green moong, rajma, kabuli chana, whole urad, desi chana, whole wheat atta, besan, basmati rice, and sonamasoori rice.
