Guyana witnessing recovery in sugar output

Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has stated that its three operational estates have produced a daily high of 654.3 metric tonnes of sugar on March 3. The estates have been identified as Albion, Blaimont and Uitvlugt, said the Guyana Chronicle.

Since the downsizing of the industry by the previous government, this was the highest production reported in a single day.

The achievement has been attributed to the increased productivity and better yield after investment in machines like bell loaders and other mechanical and semi-mechanical harvesting. The corporation has set a target to produce approx 97,420 metric tonnes of sugar by the end of this year.

The government plans to sell 61% of value-added products by 2025.
GuySuCo has secured US$30 per metric tonne for sugar from Trinidad and Tobago and has signed a one-year agreement with Demerara Distillers Limited.
