Haryana: Farmers demand hike in sugarcane SAP

Chandigarh: Accusing the government of neglecting the hardships faced by farmers who suffered crop losses due to floods and heavy rainfall, the BKU Charuni staged protests across district headquarters in Haryana on Monday, reported Hindustan Times.

They pressed for the immediate release of flood compensation, an increase in the sugarcane state-advised price (SAP) from ₹372 per quintal to ₹450, and the advancement of the Parmal rice procurement deadline to September 15.

Addressing the gathering, Gurnam Singh Charuni reiterated their stance, asserting, “The government is pushing us into these protests while simultaneously forgiving loans of large corporate entities amounting to substantial sums, yet it remains unable to provide flood compensation to our farmers.”

In addition to their protests, the farmers submitted a memorandum, outlining their demands, which included permission to sell sand and silt minerals accumulated in their fields due to flooding in low-lying areas, duty exemptions for Parmal rice, and the removal of basmati export restrictions.

Charuni issued a warning to the government, stating that if the procurement of Parmal rice does not commence by September 15, statewide protests and highway blockades would ensue.
