Haryana farmers threaten to intensify agitation demanding hike in sugarcane SAP

Ambala: The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) has threatened the government to launch a statewide agitation in January if it fails to increase the State Advised Price (SAP) for sugarcane, reports Tribune India.

The farmers’ organisation has demanded a hike in SAP to Rs 450 per quintal from earlier Rs 362 per quintal. Farmers said the cost of production has increased further this year because the sugarcane crop came under pest attack and they had spent a huge amount on sprays to save the crop.

Gurnam Singh Charuni, BKU (Charuni) chief said, “The cane crushing operations have begun in the state but the state government is yet to announce the SAP for cane while the Punjab government has increased SAP for the cane to Rs 380 per quintal. We are also objecting to the government’s decision to reduce the weight of cane by 7% from the existing 5%.”
