Heavy rain causes damage to sugarcane and other crops across western Uttar Pradesh

Meerut/Bijnor: The farmers in Western UP allege that they are waiting for the crop damage assessment due to recent rain and hailstorm. The rain has caused heavy damage to sugarcane and other crops.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked the officials to conduct an assessment of the damaged crops in the state.

According to the news report published in The Times of India, Diwakar Singh, national vice president of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Bhanu) said, “The revenue department is doing assessment only on paper. They are conducting assessment of crop damage without visiting fields and consulting farmers. Officials are preparing reports arbitrarily. They are showing 25% loss to standing paddy crop and 50% to harvested crop. Whereas, in some places, the damage is more than 70%. Paddy crop has turned black. Heavy moisture has distorted the quality of the grain.”

The authorities, however, have refuted the allegations.
