High temperature not likely to damage wheat crops

Though the temperature is increasing, it is unlikely to affect the wheat crop, said Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra stating that there would be a record output of 112 million tonnes this crop year ending June, reports The Hindu

The ban on wheat exports will continue to make available enough grains for government procurement, he said.

Government procures wheat between April and June.

“The prices of wheat have come down and they will ease further after the arrival of the new crop. We had a meeting with the state food secretaries and state food ministers and found out that the food scene in the country is very comfortable,” he said.

“The next two weeks are crucial periods for the formation of the grain and the heat wave during that period may damage the crop. So far no report of damage to the wheat crop due to the heat wave has been reported,” he said.

As per the second advance estimate by the Agriculture Ministry, the wheat output is projected at 112.18 million tonnes.

Due to heat waves in some key producing states in 2021-22, wheat production fell to 107.74 million tonnes from 109.59 million tonnes in the previous year.
