Jalandhar: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of the Samyukt Sugarcane Sangharsh Committee protested on the premises of Mukerian Sugar Mill in Hoshiarpur district demanding the clearing of pending cane dues worth Rs 117 crore, reports Indian Express.
As per the rule, the mill should clear the cane bills of farmers within two weeks of crushing their cane, said farmer leaders Satnam Singh, Gurpratap Singh, Avtar Singh, and Vijay Behbalmanj.
The protesting farmers called off their agitation after the mill officials agreed to clear their payments in four installments and gave a written assurance in this regard to the local sub-divisional magistrate. As per the assurance, the mill will clear Rs 10 crore in two installments and the next installments of Rs 48 crore and Rs 25 crore would be cleared on February 27, 28, March 7, and 12.
