Identity card for sugarcane harvesters in Maharashtra

Maharashtra government will issue identity cards to the sugarcane labourers working in the state to ensure that they are not deprived of the development schemes and social security.

According to the news report published in Thehindubusinessline.com, around six lakh cane harvesters from Marathwada region of Maharashtra migrate to western Maharashtra and neighbouring states from October to March during cane crushing season.

The identity cards would help the labourers to get health schemes, financial assistance and accommodation and other benefits and schemes planned by the government for them.

This is for the first time the state government has launched the initiative to record the migrant workers and provide them with identity cards. Through the digital registration system Ganesh Eknath Mhaske, resident of Gopinathgad in Parli taluka of Beed district became the first cane cutter to get an identity card.
