India will achieve a 20% ethanol blending target by 2025: Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey

New Delhi: India will achieve the target of 20% ethanol blending with petrol by 2025, said Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey on Wednesday, according to thehindubusinessline.

He was speaking at a conference on ‘Sugar and ethanol’ organised by Brazil’s Datagro and Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA).

“As far as capacity creation is concerned, we are on track and will achieve our set target in the next three years,” he said.

Addressing the gathering, he said that the sugar mills should pass on the benefits to consumers.

India needs a total quantity of 1,016 crore litres of ethanol for 20% blending and the logistical infrastructure for the same should be streamlined and strengthened, said Akhilesh Goyal, Managing Director of Madhya Pradesh-based Maa Rewa Sugar while speaking on the topic “Ethanol distribution & Logistics”.

Citing the issue of transportation, he said that to carry 29,000 litres of ethanol we need 3, 50,000 tankers and using them would result in GHG emission of 76 million tonnes. Hence most of the ethanol should move through a pipeline or by Railways, he said.
