Indian wheat export doubled in first five months of this financial year

Indian wheat export in the first five months of this financial year starting from April to August 2023 doubled compared to the same period during the last financial year, reports The Indian Express.

During the above-mentioned period, India exported 43.50 lakh metric tonnes (mt) which was 116.7% more than the same period last year as per the data released by the Department of Commerce.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February boosted the export of Indian wheat. In April, wheat exports were 14.71 lmt, 500% higher than the 2.42 lmt exported in April last year. In May, the government announced a ban on exports resulting in lowering exports to 10.79 lmt which were however 164% higher than the 4.08 lmt exports in May 2021.
India exported wheat to 44 countries in April. Indonesia was the top buyer after the ban on exports. In the five-month period from April to August, Indonesia has been the No. 2 export destination for Indian wheat after Bangladesh (8.06 lmt and 11.12 lmt respectively).
