Indonesia: Government to set up new sugar factory next year

Jakarta: The government is set to start construction on a sugar factory in the special economic zone (SEZ) of Merauke, South Papua, next year, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance domestic production, reported Jakarta Post.

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that discussions are underway between his ministry and the State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Ministry regarding the establishment of a sugar plant in the region. Papua was chosen as the location due to the ample available land.

Andi mentioned, “We aim to commence the construction of the sugar factory in Merauke next year, but our current focus is on rice,” as reported by Kumparan.
