Jalandhar: Farmers turn away from sugarcane cultivation

Jalandhar: After repeated agitations for their pending dues, nothing worked in sugarcane favours. Therefore, unions have decided that from now onwards cane growers would stop sowing cane.

“Number of farmers have already stopped cane sowing. No one wants to fight for their dues after working hard in fields,” said a union leader.

As sugarcane farmers are yet to receive dues, they said that farmers were left with no option but to take loans from arhtiyas and banks to make both ends meet.

One sugarcane farmer claims that sugarcane crop was the only option for them to get out of the vicious circle of paddy and wheat, but the government’s policies indicate that they hardly care for farmers’ welfare and crop diversification concept.
